Our air conditioner went out on us Friday night and after calling the emergency maintenance line and having the guy come out to take a look at it, he gave us some bad news: He couldn’t fix it until Monday afternoon. This is not what we wanted to hear considering it’s the middle of summer and humid as heck here in Michigan. But there’s nothing we could do, so we opened the windows and hoped for the best.
Dave dug an old box fan out of the closet and we put it in the living room window to help circulate air. We also opened windows in the bedroom and office to help circulate. It was muggy and not really all that cool, but better than nothing, right?
Friday moved into Saturday and then into Sunday and we were still alive even though the air conditioning wasn’t working. This may not be a big deal to some, but we’ve been accustomed to air and never had to wonder how we’d stay cool without it. At night we put the fan in the bedroom window and then during the day we’d move it back out into the living room window. It kept things moderately cool, although I found myself wearing a tank top and the lightest pair of cotton capris I owned all weekend just to help cool me down.
Maintenance came Monday afternoon and replaced our air conditioner and now things are up and running as per usual. But I’m thinking…maybe at night we’ll turn the air off and take advantage of the cool night air by opening our bedroom window with the fan in it. We could really save on our electric bill by doing this and I think we’ll continue for the rest of the summer.
As a side note, we normally don’t mess with opening the windows because our cats like to push the screens out of the window and get outside, which is never a good thing. So far the cats have always wandered back inside or whined to be let back in, but it’s such a hassle to keep having to fix the screen. Over the weekend we found that having the fan in the window was a deterrent to keeping the cats away because they were scared of the noise! We’ll see if we can keep up the nighttime open window charade without losing our cats or our sanity!
