So one of my August goals was to spend $80 or less at Sam’s Club. We don’t go to Sam’s Club all too often. In fact, I don’t think we’ve been there for about 2-3 months. Granted, I’m cooking at home a lot more now, so I go through more meat and stuff (which is mainly what we buy at Sam’s). Anyway.
I went over my budget by $3.82. I could’ve easily come under, but I was running low on diced tomatoes ($5.32 for 8 cans - $.66 per can) and tomato sauce ($5.48 for 12 cans - $.46 per can), so we got a case of each of those. And they had a 2pk of Fiber One cereal for $4.60 ($2.30 per box!), and a huge pack of tortillas for $3.08 (which is awesome because I normally pay $2 for a pack of 12 and I think there about 30 in this pack). So overall we spent $83.82, but I’m happy with what we got!
Just over $65 of that total was spent on meat. We bought nearly 32 pounds of meat for that price! I came home and packed everything into separate freezer bags for meal-sized amounts and it filled half our freezer! Here’s how it broke down:
- Hamburger: 9.45lb - 8 meals worth ($2.53 per meal)
- Round Eye Roast: 3.69lb - 2 meals worth ($4.23 per meal)
- Country Style Ribs: 8.7lb - 3 meals worth ($4.58 per meal)
- Boneless pork chops: 4.61lb - 4 meals worth ($2.84 per meal)
- Boneless/Skinless Chicken breasts: 5.34lb - 3 meals worth (at least, probably more, but I broke it into 3 bags because there were 7 breasts) ($3.86 per meal)
That’s at least 20 meals, people! And considering there are usually leftovers, we have leftover night once or twice a week. I’m thinking this meat will last us at least a month and a half, if not more. Probably closer to 2 months, but we’ll see. This will drastically cut costs for when we’re grocery shopping each week since I really shouldn’t have to buy meat at all for the next month or more! That’s exciting to me. I have a husband who would eat meat for breakfast and dessert if he could. He loves it that much. So even though I try to cook a meal or two each week w/o meat (to save on money), it’s a main center of a lot of our meals.
