I made a trip to Sam’s Club yesterday to pick up some stuff in bulk.  We usually use our membership mainly to get good deals on meat, but this time I picked up quite a few different items.  Since I’ve decided to make homemade pizza once a week (so cheap compared to ordering in and it satisfies our pizza cravings) I wanted to stock up on some of the ingredients we’ll use a lot, including those that I use to make our own dough/crust.  Here’s what I got for $59:

  • 25 lb. bag of bread flour
  • 5 lb. bag of mozzarella cheese
  • 2 lb. dry active yeast
  • 48 oz. container of minced garlic (the kind you refrigerate)
  • 5 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • large bag of flour tortillas
  • 12 cans of Campbell’s chicken noodle soup
  • 2 pk. box of Bisquick
  • 10 lb. bag of sugar

I figure the baking supplies will last me a LONG time, even if I am making homemade pizza crust each week and sometimes making bread.  Pillsbury bread flour costs about $3.84 at Wal-Mart for a 5 pound bag (.77 per pound) and I got a 25 pound bag for around $10.84 at Sam’s (.43 per pound). The cheese should also last quite a while and came out to about 15 cents per ounce compared to the 25 cents I usually pay when I find shredded cheese ON SALE at my grocery store.  The yeast was a great deal and will last me a long time, also.

We go through a lot of tortillas because I like to make cheese rollups for a quick snack (served with salsa and sour cream).  The Campbell’s soup (which I usually get on sale for $1 at my grocery store) came out to around 70 cents per can, and it’ll come in useful for quick lunches once I start working (since I only get a half hour, I come home for lunch and eat rather quickly).

From doing the Kraft deals, I have 60 packets of Kool-Aid and bought the sugar mainly because of that (even though I only use 1/2 cup per packet since I like it taste more like Gatorade than a sugary treat).  And the other items were mainly just because I had run out.

I came in $10 under my $70 budget for Sam’s Club this month, and we didn’t even really buy any meat (other than the family pack of chicken).  I made a menu plan for the next month in order to utilize what we have left from our big Sam’s shopping trip back in August, and I shouldn’t have to buy ANY MEAT for the next month unless something comes up and I change the menu.  So that’s rather amazing, considering I cook with meat at ALMOST every dinner.

Does anyone else find it amazing that I’ve been able to stretch $65 worth of meat since August 2nd? And it will last me another 4 weeks? I mean REALLY?!?  Talk about frugal living!  Menu planning has saved my life in that aspect.
